Neighborhood Series

Art provides an outlet for me to explore the complex nature of human connectedness. I create art to simplify my understanding of the people and ecology that define our world. I’m inspired by day-to-day pedestrian archetypes. The Neighborhood Series of drawings captures the fleeting moods of West Philadelphia as it’s transformed by the influx of growing businesses, new residents, petty crimes, and trope characters. It represents a platform for communication. I hope it encourages people from different walks of life to exchange ideas and learn about each other. The portraits are colored in with sharpie paint markers that drip and splatter with the fusions of vibrant colors. I used thin lines to illustrate how close we are connected and I omitted a background setting for some of the figures to promote viewer interaction in the sense the viewers imagine a personal narrative to match the character on display. My art is reflective of my observations and perceptions. To me, it’s how I connect and build strong relationships with people. It’s how I interact with the world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

There is so much to see and learn about, and for that my passions are extremely charged and my artworks are the by-product of my consciousness. Similar to a public diary entry, each installation reveals pieces of an evolving story. For me, art is a catharsis.
